Wonderful, fat strawberry, with coffee and chocolate characters. Ripe fruit and soft tannins make this a mouth-coating rich vintage. Dark berries, coffee and chocolate with great vanilla oak character and a long lingering finish.
The oldest blocks in Cline’s 80-to-100-year-old Oakley vineyards provided the Zinfandel for this bottling. The sandy soils in eastern Contra Costa County managed to avoid the phylloxera of the late 19th century. These soils, as well as the moderating influence of the Sacramento River delta, encourage the gnarled vines to produce grape clusters with a great balance of acid and fruit. These vines are head-pruned and dry-farmed, much as they were by the Italian and Portuguese farmers who planted them originally. Organic, low-intensity farming and a hands-off approach to winemaking produce Zinfandel of stunning concentration. It would pair well with slow-cooked BBQ pork or a spinach mushroom casserole.
The 2014 vintage of this Zin was included in the Wine Spectator's "Top 100 Value Wines" for 2016!
It's great to find both lots of fruit and good structure in a Zin, especially at such a reasonable price. Spicy aromas like vanilla and nutmeg precede vivid and ripe fruit flavors and more of those oaky spices on the palate where firm tannins and a bite of acidity give a mouthwatering balance." – Wine Enthusiast, 89pts.
