This vintage of the Leese-Fitch Firehouse Red shows aromatics of Bing cherry, huckleberry, sweet leather and cedar with hints of toasted dill and earth. The flavor starts with dark chocolate covered cherries, espresso, vanilla bean, blackberry syrup and tart plum. The finish shows Italian roast coffee, heavy toasted French oak, balsalmic reduction and cocoa nibs.
The 2015 vintage produced wines with a strong backbone and great depth. Low yields in the vineyards gave the winemakers the tools to make concentrated wines with rich, complex nuances. The lead varietal is Petite Sirah from Lodi and Clarksburg, adding both warm and cool climate fruits to the blend. Syrah from Lodi and Contra Costa County adds wild nuances, with a touch of white pepper and dark black fruit. Zinfandel from Lodi and Sonoma County adds brambly fruit, softening the wine. Merlot from Clarksburg adds brightness and structure, while Mourvedre from Contra Costa County contributes cherry and dark huckleberry notes for further complexity. Finally, a splash of Clarksburg Tempranillo softens the mouthfeel. The vineyards incorporated in this blend continue to reach to new corners of California with each vintage, adding complexity to the wine. The Lodi fruit contributes plum and cassis characteristics, and round, supple tannins. The Clarksburg fruit adds cold climate nuances in the form of powerful tannins, zesty lime and tart raspberry notes. A significant new component of the blend is Merlot from Mendocino, showing bright acidity, savory herbs and brilliant cherry. The Ruby Cab and Rubired from Lodi add beautiful color in the glass and depth to the mid palate. Lodi Zinfandel helps balance the tannins and adds brambly fruit and complexity. Finally, the Clarksburg Petite Sirah makes its way into the mix for color and depth.
